WRITE YOUR NAME IN MAYA HIEROGLYPHS
Step 1: write out your name in syllables on a notecard
Examples: Anna = a na Javier = ha ve a r(e)
Step 2: Using the Maya Syllabic Grid, find the glyphs that best match each syllable
of your name.
Note: Mayan languages do not have glyphs for the sounds represented by
the letters d, f, g, q, r, or v, find another glyph that sounds similar. Syllables
use Spanish pronunciations.
Step 3: Write your name by drawing the glyphs in sequence (top left to bottom
right), according to the number of syllables and the order shown in the block
diagrams below. For two and three syllable names, chose the block that best fits the
glyphs of your name. The vowel of the last syllable is silent.
