receives women
into membership at the graduate level by invitation only through
its local graduate chapters. Women who meet the general
requirements for membership herein outlined may be invited to
accept membership.

is an international
organization of college and graduate women whose purpose is
to encourage scholarship, friendship and service. Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated does not discriminate based upon
race, religion or national origin. The organization is governed by
a Board of Directors, which includes ten Regional Directors who
supervise membership within an identied geographical area,
including colleges and universities.

was founded in
1908 at Howard University, Washington, D.C., and is the oldest
sorority, founded by women of African descent. We believe that
all people should be treated with dignity, respect and kindness.
Therefore, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has a zero
tolerance policy regarding hazing.

process.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s ofcial graduate Membership Intake
Process (MIP) is by invitation only. It begins with a Letter of
Invitation from a graduate chapter of the sorority and attendance
at the Information Session. Participation in MIP activities in
the name of the sorority prior to receipt of an ofcial Letter of
Invitation on chapter stationery is prohibited. There is neither
“pledging” nor a Rush.
General Requirements for Membership Include:
High ethical and moral standards;
Completion of at least a baccalaureate degree with
a cumulative average of at least C+ or a graduate or
professional degree from an accredited senior college or
university.
Motivation and ability to promote and extend the
policies and programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated.
Women interested or seeking membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. should not participate in demeaning, degrading or
unkind acts. Should members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc. ask you to perform tasks or participate in activities other
than those outlined in our MIP, they do not represent the values
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and will not be tolerated.
CompletIon of any of the following actIvItIes/tasks for
favorable consIderation of membershIp is prohibited,
per Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Anti-Hazing Policy. Additional

Attending meetings or activities (The ofcial Membership
Intake Process of three weekends are the required
meetings);
Participation in specied activities, organizations, etc.
Participation in individual or group physical activities;
Purchasing of any item (gifts, gasoline, tickets, food, drink,
clothes, etc.) for or from any member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha, Incorporated or her designee;
Dressing in a particular color or in any similar manner;
Performing tasks/chores for any member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha or her designee;
Giving money to individual members of Alpha
Kappa Alpha;
Attending any study/history sessions.
There will be no Membership Activities prior to receipt of
an OFFICIAL LETTER OF INVITATION.
The Membership Intake Process begins when an Ofcial Letter
of Invitation inviting one to membership is received.

WILL NOT BE EXTENDED TO:
An individual who knowingly participates in activities outside of the ofcial Membership Intake Process;
An individual who knowingly participates in activities that are demeaning, degrading, or demoralizing;
An individual who knowingly submits falsied documents or credentials.

ANTI-HAZING POLICY
Reference: Anti-Hazing Handbook, Say “No” To Hazing!
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and
friendship among college women, and to be of service to all mankind. Hazing does not represent the values of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc.
®
and will not be tolerated. Hazing may include, but is not limited to:
Attending unauthorized meetings, sessions or activities;
• Removing garments;
• Eating or drinking anything as a requirement for membership;
• Being subjected to any form of verbal, physical or mental harassment or intimidation.

requires that those interested in membership will support our policy against hazing, harassment and/
or humiliation of any kind. Colleges and universities also have rules that prevent hazing and penalties for such acts. Hazing is against
the law in MOST states in the United States.
