Dr. Vladimir Alexander Appeaning’s public service career spans 22-plus years in
higher education and state government. Dr. Appeaning currently serves in a dual
role as Southern University System’s Vice President for Strategic Planning, Policy
and Institutional Eectiveness and Vice Chancellor for Academic Compliance
and SACSCOC Accreditation Liaison for the Southern University Baton Rouge
Campus (SUBR) and Adjunct Professor of Public Policy and Administration in the
Nelson Mandela College of Government and Social Sciences.
Dr. Appeaning’s public service career encompasses the following appointments:

Dr. Appeaning serves as an adjunct professor in Public Policy/Public Administration focusing on strategic planning, program
implementation and evaluation; research methods, environmental and natural resources management and policy. Dr. Appeaning is
published and has secured over $157 Million in federal grants through the United States Environmental Protection Agency for statewide
wastewater infrastructure projects that have greatly expanded environmental protection and economic development opportunities for
Louisiana’s 305 municipalities – villages, towns, cities and parishes.
Dr. Appeaning is a proud alumnus of Southern University and A & M College, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and served as the
Chief Student Marshal of his graduating class with a Bachelor of Science in Urban Forestry (1994); two Masters Degrees - a Master of
Public Administration (1995) and Master of Science in Environmental Sciences (1999); and a Ph.D. in Public Policy (2000) from the
Nelson Mandela School of College of Government at Southern University and A&M College.

INTERIM CHANCELLOR, DR. VLADIMIR ALEXANDER APPEANING
The Southern University at Shreveport Foundation hosted a meet and
greet reception for SUSLA’s Interim Chancellor, Dr. Appeaning. Director
of the SUSF, Mr. Frank Williams, Jr., organized the event that board
of Supervisors member Sam Gilliam attended, dozens of community
leaders and stakeholders within the Shreveport-Bossier area. The
foundation awarded the school a $100,000 check for scholarships and
other needs during the event. Again, we welcome Dr. Alex Appeaning to
the Southern University at Shreveport family.

HOME DEPOT’S RETOOL YOUR
SCHOOL: THE HOLIDAY EDITION
We have launched the “Holiday Edition” of the Home
Depot’s Retool Your School Beautification Project at
Southern University at Shreveport, which has inspired
holiday cheer for all who enter our campus buildings.
The holiday “beautification” is spread across the L.C.
Barnes Administration Building, the Metro Center, and
the School of Nursing’s Allen Building. Here are a few
views of the lobby of the main campus!

Services Jorge Sousa III completed the Greater
Shreveport Leadership Shreveport Program by
the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.
This interactive, year-long program develops
community-minded business and civic leaders of
tomorrow. This initiative provides a behind-the-
scenes view of the issues that impact the region’s
economy. Still, it guides people through all aspects
of a community such as Government, Schools,
Business, Social Services, Education, and Media.
Congratulations to Mrs. Jacobsen and Mr. Sousa on
this accomplishment!

SUSLA & AEP SWEPCO — DELIVERING ON THE DREAM:
SOCIAL & RACIAL JUSTICE
SUSLA students participated in a video shoot for American Electric Power’s Southwestern Electric Power Company
(AEP SWEPCO). The company sent a videography crew to the university to produce a short video called Delivering
on the Dream as part of a $250,000 grant awarded to Southern University at Shreveport to establish the Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Academy.
The gift is part of the foundation’s Delivering on the Dream: Social and Racial Justice grant program, a five-year,
$5 million commitment to fund organizations with programs dedicated to advancing social and racial justice in
communities American Electric Power serves.

The Jaguar Marketplace gave a thank you lunch for students and
employees at Southern University at Shreveport. The event was a
grab-and-go and not an entire gathering for the campus. Aramark
runs the campus’ restaurant.

HONOREES
The Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce recognized their 40
honorees at their annual Y40 Under Forty gala. Southern University at
Shreveport’s very own, Victor L. Thomas, was one of the members of
the 2021 class and honored at an exclusive dinner with his co-workers
and family. The 40 Under Forty Awards profile Northwest Louisiana’s
outstanding entrepreneurs, executives, managers, and professionals
in public, private, or non-profit sectors. Winners are chosen based
on achievement, experience and innovation, vision, leadership, and
community involvement.

Christmas Pajama Final Midnight Brunch for
students to unwind after finals week. The event
was in the Johnny L. Vance Student Center, and
students had a chance to play games and win
prizes. Congratulations, students, for finishing
the fall semester!

AWARDS MR. ROY GRIGGS
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Northwest Louisiana Chapter
awarded Roy Griggs, Millionaire McDonald’s franchisee, the Outstanding
Philanthropist Award. Mr. Griggs has donated over $100,000 to fund the School
of Business, scheduled to open in 2022.

SUSLA’s Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is once
again hosting its Annual “Toys For Tots” Drive
on Monday, December 13, 2021. VUB is asking
the public to reach into their hearts and bring
unwrapped toys to one of our two campuses in
Shreveport. The day long drive-through drop
o runs from 5:30 AM until 12:30 PM on the
Main Campus, 3050 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Drive, and continues from Noon-5 PM at our
Downtown Campus Metro Center, First Floor
Atrium, 610 Texas Street.

SUSLA FACULTY & STAFF CLOSE OUT THE YEAR 2021 WITH A CHRISTMAS PARTY
Tre’Davious White, All-Pro and Pro Bowl cornerback for the Bualo Bills has announced today that he is purchasing 1,000 turkeys
from Brookshire’s Grocery Store to donate to those in need in Shreveport, LA this Thanksgiving. Tre’Davious has partnered with
Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) who will facilitate the distribution. “I initially told my team to help me setup a
Turkey Give-A-Way and to look into 300 Turkeys for me to purchase, said Tre’Davious. After we secured that, there was something
in my heart that urged me to want to do more for the city that gave me so much – so, I decided to commit 1,000 Turkeys instead.
My hope is that it truly helps those in need this Thanksgiving to enjoy a nice meal. Brookshire’s Grocery Store has also committed
to donating canned goods and stung to accompany the Turkeys, to round out the meal.
