What to include
in a personal
statement
Personal statements should be well written and articulate. Spelling, accuracy of grammar and diversity of vocabulary
are important.
Things to consider and include in your statement
• Why do you want to study this subject?
• Specific aspects of the course that are of interest to you
• Experience in performing arts/dance/Musical Theatre
• Examples of school coursework or practical work you have completed that relate to this subject
• Books, magazines, web sites you are aware of/read that are related to the subject area
• Work experience, a part time job, or a hobby that might relate to some aspect of the subject area
• Community, charity or voluntary involvement
• Sixth form activities or other school related involvement in the subject area
• Personal experiences that have encouraged you to explore this subject leading to the desire to study at University
• Where you think a degree in this subject might take you in the future
• Evidence that you are a reliable and responsible person
• What you might have gained from formal extra-curricular activities such as Young Enterprise, World Challenge,
Duke of Edinburgh Award, Asdan Award, Scouts, clubs, debating societies, or similar.
Your interests and skills
• What you like to do in your free time
• Your wider sport and leisure activities Subjects you might research or study in your own time
• Subjects you study that are not examined
• Languages you speak
• Prizes you have won or positions achieved in your interests
