SUMMER PROGRAM
GUIDE
Dear Families,
Thank you for your interest in Newark Public Schools’ Summer
Programs! Continuing to learn during the summer is an
important part of student achievement. Summer learning
loss, also known as “summer slide,” shows that students can
fall back two months in reading and math!
To stop summer slide, Newark Public Schools is proud to offer
exciting programs that combine academics and enrichment.
We hope that students will grow, learn and have fun before
starting the new school year!
Please review this guide for information on all programs.

SUMMER PLUS
Summer Plus is a district wide initiative to ensure that Newark Public Schools (NPS) does
everything possible to curb summer learning loss and to provide enrichment experiences for
students that will inspire dedication for learning. Summer Plus combines academic and
enrichment into a full day program. Summer Plus has been developed by NPS’ curriculum
experts to improve critical math and literacy skills and ensure that participants are well
prepared to start school in September.
The morning core academic classes are taught by NPS teachers and supported by NPS staff.
The afternoon enrichment sessions are delivered by NPS Teachers and community-based
organizations (CBOs). Community partners support our additional needs through providing
resources to support positive youth development such as character education and healthful
living. Together, the NPS staff and Community Partners offer themed project-based learning
that is linked to the morning class material.
