management community, sharing the Foundation’s accomplishments and securing the resources for the Foundation

THE INSIDE STORY

IREM FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT –

TURNED CPM LEADER

As a former Diversity Scholars and Diversity Outreach

Scholarship recipient, I want to share the mark that

the Foundation has made on my career.

I was introduced to IREM in 2006, when I was

awarded a complimentary registration to take the

RES201 track to obtain my ARM certification. After

completing the coursework and passing the ARM

exam, I was finally an ARM designee.

I was aware of the coveted CPM designation and learned from other members of my chapter about the cost and time

investment to achieve the designation. At that point in my career, I did not see how obtaining the designation was within my

reach. While coming from a generation that always asks, “What’s next?” I felt that I had reached a roadblock.

Although my local chapter offers scholarship opportunities, I knew it would take me years to complete the designation

using those funds. At the time, I was not in a position to cover the out-of-pocket expenses. One day someone shared with

me that there were scholarships through the IREM Foundation. Shortly after finding out about this opportunity I applied for,

and received, a Diversity Outreach Scholarship. I was able to repeat this process several times, in addition to applying for

local chapter scholarships, enabling me to complete the required coursework for the CPM designation within one year. This

was no easy feat for a person working a full-time job and raising a young daughter as a single mother. A huge part of my

motivation was that I had my sights set on transitioning from multifamily to commercial management. One of my mentors

shared with me that obtaining my CPM designation would show employers how serious I was about my career. This advice

proved to be true. Weeks after finding out I passed the CPM exam and MPSA, I was offered a position in commercial

management.

In 2010 I was awarded a complimentary registration and travel subsidy to attend a national conference through the Diversity

Scholars Program. The experience of attending a national conference kicked my role with IREM into the next gear and helped

to shape my IREM career. Since attending the conference, I have remained active on both the chapter and national level,

having served in various committee roles within my local chapter. I am currently serving as the 2016 Chapter President. On

the national level, I have served on the IREM Young Professional Task Force, as a Governing Councilor and as a committee

member on the Diversity Advisory Board.

I firmly believe these accomplishments were made possible by the financial support from the IREM Foundation and the

mentorship I received as part of the process of being a scholarship recipient and a Diversity Scholar recipient. My mentors,

Jae Roe, CPM, ACoM, and Vera McPherson, CPM, ARM, have been instrumental in helping me navigate through this journey.

Scholarship and Grant Activity

This year, we provided $215,104 in scholarships and grants.

We are pleased to share with you the impact being made in

the lives of so many who benefit from the IREM Foundation

Scholarship and Grant Funding Programs.

We provided critical funding to IREM in support of academic

and diversity outreach; international programming; and

scholarships to bring students to IREM conferences enabling

them to get a taste of the IREM experience.

The Foundation continues to inspire, encourage, and support

IREM members in their pursuit of an IREM credential through

the awarding of our scholarships.

Here are a few highlights:

Scholarship Program

• 136 scholarship awards worth a total $141,614

• Scholarships resulted in 331 IREM course registrations

• IREM grant payments total $43,814

Chapter Restricted Fund Program

The IREM Foundation Chapter Restricted Fund Program

permits IREM Chapter’s to earmark or “restrict” funds for

scholarship awards for its local members to attend IREM

courses.

• 22 of the 44 IREM Chapters awarded 39 scholarships

worth $29,676

• 74 course registrations resulted from these awards

The IREM Foundation had the distinct pleasure of presenting two of our

three prestigious awards in recognition of exceptional and continual

contributions made in the real estate management industry.

Natalie Brecher, CPM from Torrance, CA received the Lloyd D. Hanford,

Sr. Distinguished Instructor Award. As a result of direct contributions

in memory of Lloyd D. Hanford, Sr., the IREM Foundation established

the Lloyd D. Hanford, Sr. Distinguished Instructor Award. The award

recognizes the importance of education in the real estate management

profession.

This award is presented to an IREM instructor who has exemplified

extraordinary dedication to the educational process and the advancement

of knowledge within the property management profession.

Natalie founded Brecher & Associates Incorporated in 1998 to provide

real estate advisory services. Since 1974, Brecher has worked with

investment real estate: development, syndication, acquisition, asset and

property management, marketing, and disposition.

Active with IREM, she obtained the CPM designation in 1980. In 1988,

she became one of IREM’s instructors and began serving as a trainer for

its new instructors in 2004. Natalie served as chairperson for IREM’s

Faculty Education Forum, as a Faculty Director, and a member of the

Education Committee.

Natalie has delivered hundreds of keynote speeches and training

sessions. As a member of the National Speakers Association, she earned

the Los Angeles Member of the Year Award for 2005 and the Silver

Microphone Award in 2006. She is also an accomplished author who was

inducted into the IREM Academy of Authors in 2007.

Jerry Collins, CPM from Indianapolis, IN received the J. Wallace Paletou

Award named in honor of IREM’s 1957 president. Like Mr. Paletou,

the recipients of this award have devoted themselves to improving the

stature of the real estate management industry, as well as contributing to

the betterment of society through their roles, skills, and contributions as

real estate management professionals.

As a result of their leadership and professionalism, recipients of this

award have impacted their community through a variety of channels and

actions. They have a set of internalized character strengths and values

directed toward high quality service to others.

Jerry Collins earned the CPM designation in June 1993. Jerry founded

Flaherty & Collins Properties in 1993, with his partner, David Flaherty.

He is responsible for the strategic direction, operations and profitability

of the firm, which manages over 15,000 units in 13 states. Flaherty &

Collins Properties has also developed over 50 market rate and affordable

multifamily communities totaling nearly $1 billion in construction,

specializing in public private partnerships and mixed-use developments.

Flaherty & Collins Properties has also supported the homeless community

in a variety of ways – both through our projects, like Vision 1505 in

Evansville, Indiana, - and community outreach. With the goal of reducing

homelessness in Evansville, Indiana, Vision 1505 is operated as a

“Housing First” model. This unique development focuses on the transition

of homeless citizens make to long term housing, along with appropriate

services to achieve life-long self-sufficiency.

As a founding member of Vision Communities Inc., it has been a passion

of Jerry’s to help provide affordable housing through the development and

purchase of affordable housing communities, as well as providing support

to charitable groups and institutions that work with children, adults and

seniors. Founded in 2002, Vision Communities, Inc. has participated

in over 12 affordable housing developments as either a sponsor, co-

developer or owner.

The Legacy of Leaders

Fundraising and Special Events

Our special events are more than just a tool to bring in donations. The sheer enjoyment experienced by the participants,

volunteers, and even staff is priceless. The proceeds of over $30,000, from all fundraising and special events will be used

to fund educational scholarships, research, programs and initiatives to attract new generations to the real estate industry.

of our 50/50 raffle! Reggie graciously donated her winnings to

the IREM Foundation!

The IREM Foundation Party with a Purpose at the IREM

Leadership and Legislative Summit was a blast! The carnival

theme party offered several games that were operated on

a “pay per play” basis. Prizes were awarded to the top two

winners for the night. Over 230 attendees enjoyed the games

and other fun activities including dancing, a caricature artist

and a tarot card reader.

Fundraising and Special Events

The IREM Foundation hosted two special events during the IREM Fall Leadership Conference in San Diego, CA.

Over 400 people attended the Foundation’s “Party with a Purpose”, enjoying a night of dancing, games, and other fun

activities in support of the Foundation. The annual “Joe Aveni Open Golf Tournament” saw almost 50 members take on

the Steel Canyon Golf Club in a scramble format open to all skill levels.

The beach-themed, Party with a Purpose was held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.
