Economic Valuation and Socioeconomics of Coral Reefs: Methodological Issues and Three Case Studies
mining prots with the associated societal costs
can signicantly raise awareness of the long-term
detrimental impacts of coral mining. Furthermore,
an understanding of the nancial returns to coral
miners will increase the appreciation of the
driving forces behind each miner’s behavior and
so improve the design of management plans.
As has been shown in this paper, economic
valuation can be used to raise the awareness of all
those involved in the use and management of
coral reefs, with the result that the beauty of the
coral reefs may be enjoyed forever.
