Dear Mr. Powell,
During my clinical rotations as a nursing student at Sunrise Hospital I had the opportunity to witness a
professional and compassionate nursing staff. It is because of this exposure to the exceptional healthcare team that
I am writing to express my interest in the New Graduate Nursing Program. I believe my communication skills and
my ability to successfully work with an interdisciplinary healthcare team would make me an excellent addition to
your department.
While a nursing student at Sunrise Hospital, I demonstrated exceptional communication skills working with the
nurses and the physicians. My initial clinical site was in the Trauma Systems Therapy department, where I
worked under Dr. Peterson. After about two weeks of observing, I was tasked with discussing the overnight
progress of two patients with the charge nurse and reporting in detail their mental and physical statuses to the
doctor on staff each day. Shortly after being given this assignment, the overnight charge nurse informed me that
one of my patients had spent most of the night in extreme emotional distress. The next morning, I reported this to
Dr. Peterson, and she informed the mental health team and the patient’s family. My communication needed to be
accurate and efficient in order to inform the doctor of the patient’s current state. With my information, the doctor
was able to make the appropriate diagnoses. My ability to communicate effectively will continue to help facilitate
interaction between both nurses and physicians in order achieve the best possible outcomes for patients at Sunrise
Hospital.
Additionally, during my internship in Memorial Hospital’s in-patient clinic, I learned how to be a part of an
interdisciplinary healthcare team. To provide high quality patient outcomes, nurses need to successfully navigate
and participate in the multi-faceted healthcare system. Many specialists, from doctors to physical therapists, work
with the patient, and my role, which is the most consistent for the patient, is to make sure that all the healthcare
specialists are able to do their job while providing the patient and their family with information and support.
Successfully working with the various the healthcare professionals, the patients, and the patients’ family during
my internship has prepared me to be successful as a nursing professional.
In May, I will have completed a life-long goal of becoming a nurse. I am confident that my communication skills
and my ability to work as cohesive component of an interdisciplinary team would allow me to make a significant
contribution to Sunrise Hospital. My resume is included for your review. Thank you in advance for your
consideration of my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Amanda Nurse
