The Duke University Talent Identication Program is a nonprot organization
that has served over three million gifted students in grades four through twelve
since it was founded in 1980. Its mission is to recognize academically talented
students and provide them with advanced learning opportunities that foster
their intellectual and social growth.
How does Duke TIP work?
Duke TIP collaborates with educators and parents to honor academically talented students
and supplement the education these students receive in their schools. For example, Duke TIP
arranges for TIP students to take the regular ACT or SAT as seventh graders in order to assess
the extent of their intellectual abilities. TIP students are also invited to participate in various
accelerated educational programs based on their ACT or SAT test scores. All members of TIPs
7th Grade Talent Search are part of a supportive community of high achieving students with
similar priorities.
In addition, Duke TIP has an award-winning research team that conducts studies into how to
best support the educational, emotional, and social needs of gifted students. This research,
along with TIPs related advice, is shared regularly with TIP parents and educators through online
communities and consultations with TIP experts. Learn more about Duke TIP at
tip.duke.edu
.
How much does it cost to join Duke TIP?
Students join Duke TIP by enrolling in TIPs 7th Grade Talent Search. Enrollment is a onetime
process that costs $80. This nonrefundable fee includes membership in Duke TIP through the
end of the student’s senior year of high school, plus one ACT (no writing) or one SAT (no essay)
test registration. Students eligible for free or reduced lunch can join TIP and take an above
grade-level test for a reduced fee of $30. To learn more, please visit tip.duke.edu/7fees.

Did you know that
TIP also has a talent search for fourth, fth, and sixth graders? Visit tip.duke.edu/456gts to learn more.
Why is taking the ACT
or SAT important?
While students qualify for TIP
using their grade-level test
scores, once they join TIP they
are expected to take an above-
grade-level test. This is because,
at best, a grade-level test only
indicates how well a student has
mastered grade-level material.
An above-grade-level test is
needed to measure how far
above grade level a student’s
abilities go. This information,
along with advice from Duke
TIP on how to interpret it, can
be used to build an appropriate
educational plan. Learn more at

Enrollment in TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search is open from August1
through April 30. However, enrolling and testing earlier allows
students to maximize their benets. IF attending one of TIPs
summer programs is a priority, students should test by the end of
February to ensure that they receive scores in time to qualify for
this summer. (Students can always apply in future summers using
the same test scores.) Similarly, TIP holds recognition ceremonies for
students with exceptional ACT or SAT scores throughout the spring.
IF attending a ceremony is a priority, we recommend testing by the
end of February for maximum ceremony location options. Students
who test in March and achieve qualifying scores will receive a
ceremony invitation, but may have limited ceremony location
options. Students testing after March who achieve qualifying scores
will receive their award in the mail in the summer.
